Welcome to the journey of spiritual direction. This is an ancient practice in which a seeker begins working with a spiritually mature (and in some cases certified) Spiritual Director to help discern the voice of God in your life. Unlike counseling or other helping professions, direction does not provide you with answers from the director – rather, the focus is to help you (re)attune yourself to the voice and movement of God in your own life and help reveal the steps God has already been indicating for you. It is a humbling and honorable privilege to walk with you in this journey and to step into a long tradition of Christian seekers and directors.
My own guides in direction, Lynn Holt and Kathi Gatlin, define spiritual direction this way: “Spiritual direction is an ongoing relationship where two people sit together in God’s presence while listening to what God is doing in the directee’s life. In this sacred space, God is the ‘real Director.’” (Boldly Loved)
If you’re interested in exploring spiritual direction with me, the first session is free as an introduction and exploration of the process. Each session will begin with some sort of quiet and/or prayerful activity. With some prompts and probing questions I’ll invite you to begin sharing, perhaps generally or perhaps about a specific situation or question that you bring to the session. We’ll talk, listen, sometimes pray, read Scripture or poetry, color, or a variety of other things in the midst of our conversation to help navigate the questions and roadblocks of life. After 50 minutes or so we’ll begin wrapping up and looking for a predominant theme or feeling or lesson, and we’ll close in prayer about that thing once our hour is up.
I suggest meeting once per month, though sometimes more frequent is requested by the directee if a particularly needful issue arises. Subsequent sessions begin billing at $75/session per individuals.
One caveat to remember about direction: as with Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, spiritual needs are often difficult to navigate if other major issues are present. Major health, life-change, relational, or financial concerns can inhibit our ability to listen to the Divine companion with each of us. At the same time, these are also perfect opportunities to explore spiritual questions. If at our exploratory session you do not feel a greater sense of spiritual freedom perhaps direction is not what you need at that stage, but we can explore it again a few weeks or months later.
If you’d like to learn more about spiritual direction you can check my Director profile with both the Evangelical Spiritual Directors Association and/or Spiritual Directors International and then navigate to their respective Code of Ethics and FAQ pages.
